Buyer As Designer

If you’re fed up with what the high street has to offer or ethically conscious and don’t want to entertain the corporate firms, maybe it’s time you started thinking about what you want and how you can get it on your terms

There are plenty of small designers like me out there happy to design and make to your requirements.

The problem with modern fashion buying habits is we expect it now, yesterday, off the rail. And in order to satisfy that impatience we are happy to swallow poor fitting, unsuitable lengths and dubious manufacture ethics. All the while complaining about the industry we still give our money to.

In the time a careful shopper has spent trawling the streets at every level looking for the ideal garment, and often coming away disappointed, you could have found someone to do it all for you. And it needn’t be expensive. But if you’re putting all that effort in and getting something you really like why shouldn’t it cost a little more? Parting with money for quality isn’t something to be ashamed of. You’re part of a revolution. That perfect dress could supercede five you don’t really wear already hanging in your wardrobe. And you’d be parting with money to a small worthwhile homegrown business that needs your support.

I’m not sure what people are afraid of. Maybe it’s just too much effort to ask. Maybe you’re embarrassed that someone will see your bodyshape (we all have one). Maybe you actually just prefer the sterile impersonal atmosphere of a chain brand to buy your clothes in.

Instead of complaining about it, do something. Email, call, ask. What’s the worst that could happen? You might actually end up with clothes you really like.
